In Late Summer

An exceptional novel of powerful images, overlapping circles, associations rich with scents and sounds — the scenes would be picturesque were it not for the raw war crime woven into the fabric of this suggestive and poetic narrative. 'My name is Ivana. I lived fourteen summers, and this is the story of the last one.' Small in scope, vast in theme, this is a novel of open space and nature, a novel in which darkness prevails over light, death over life — written from the perspective of a murdered girl, it presents, in a language of tenderness, all the brutality of a world concealed within the idyll of rural pastoral. A novel about death from which birds still sing.

Magdalena Blažević, like Agota Kristof or Ingeborg Bachmann, creates a world woven from emotions that simmer beneath perfectly precise and lucid sentences. In Late Summer is a novel to be read slowly, because its fears, sorrows, strength, hopes and grief rise from every word — placing Magdalena Blažević among the finest contemporary literary voices.
